Dr. Lal holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of North Texas, Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
She is a physician at St Vincent’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where she works closely with patients to ensure they have the best physiological function with the least amount of intervention for a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Lal is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Clinician in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Alabama Birmingham and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Orthopedics.
She also completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Women’s Sports Medicine Program at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During this time, she worked with patient athletes diagnosed with the female-athlete triad, composed of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Her fellowship research included the impact of the female-athlete triad on one’s cardiovascular health.
Dr. Lal is committed to helping those with eating disorders create a balanced life. This is a goal she sets for herself as well, stating that time at work is rewarding but time away to replenish is vital.
She is a triathlete and has been part of the Birmingham race community both as a supporter and participant for almost 20 years. Fun fact about Dr. Lal is that she is a physician onsite at the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii each year.
Her idea of a perfect Saturday includes spending time with family and friends outside and maybe rescuing a few kittens from time to time.
Having time for introspection is as important as time with friends and family. Give me time anywhere on the Hawaiian Islands, work or play, and I’m golden!
